Grigory Maliev

Grigory Maliev was born on June 9, 1978 in Novorossiysk, Russia. In his early years, he learned to play the piano from his mother, a well-known music theory teacher in southern Russia, and later learned to play the clarinet from his father, who is also a clarinetist. During his studies at the Novorossiysk Music College, he won first prize in the Wind Instrument Competition in southern Russia in 1996. That same year, he joined the St. Petersburg Conservatory. In 2003, he was a semi-finalist in the XIII International Clarinet Competition Dos Hermanas in Spain. The following year, he won first prize at the international competition "XXI Century Art" in Kiev-Vorzel. Since then, he has regularly performed as a soloist with various ensembles and orchestras both in Russia and abroad (Moscow, Novorossiysk, Weimar, Warsaw, etc.), alongside renowned musicians such as Chinghiz Osmanov (violin), Oleg Vainshtein (piano), Evgeny Izotov (piano), Pavel Sokolov (oboe), Dmitry Vorontsov (horn), Mikhail Degtyarev (cello), and many others. In addition, he is involved in teaching activities.

He graduated with honors from the St. Petersburg Conservatory, named after Rimsky-Korsakov, in 2002 and completed a postgraduate course in 2006. Since 2006, he has been teaching clarinet and chamber music at the St. Petersburg Music School and the Rimsky-Korsakov Music College. Since 2008, he has been a senior lecturer at the Department of Woodwind Instruments at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, as well as brass ensemble and several theoretical subjects (such as teaching methodology, music history, performance history, etc.). Grigory has also developed a special breathing technique for woodwind players and actively advocates for teaching his students from the first steps to graduation at the conservatory. Many of his students are prize-winners of prestigious international competitions and work in leading orchestras and theaters in St. Petersburg, such as the Mariinsky Theater and the Maly Opera Theater. Due to his skills and extensive experience, he has gained a reputation as one of the leading music educators in St. Petersburg. He also serves as an examiner and juror and is frequently asked to participate in national and international music competitions. His masterclasses and refresher courses are in high demand. He has received the highest awards in the field of education several times and has been recognized as the best teacher among other teachers of culture and art.

In 2016, he became the leader of the woodwind quintet "Gaudeamus" and created unique arrangements for woodwind quintet and horn orchestra, including the most successful one for Vivaldi's "Four Seasons." He has made a number of masterful recordings in the top studio "Melody," including works by J. Brahms, R. Schumann, and particularly interesting his own arrangement for wind sextet of P. I. Tchaikovsky's sacred music.
