Biography
Ana Catalina Ramírez Castrillo, 2014 Latin Grammy-nominated clarinetist, is Principal Clarinet of the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica and Professor of Clarinet at Costa Rica’s National Institute of Music.
She began her musical studies at the National Institute of Music and continued her education in the United States, studying with Frankie Kelly, Jonathan Cohler, Michael Sussman, and Ricardo Morales. She earned her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Temple University.
Dr. Ramírez has performed with leading ensembles including the National and Youth Symphony Orchestras of Costa Rica, the Heredia National Band – where she served as principal clarinet for seven years, the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra – where she was Principal Clarinet for two years, Opera North, the Orchestra of the Americas, the YouTube Symphony Orchestra, and Philadelphia’s Network for New Music Ensemble.
She has presented recitals and master classes throughout Latin America and Europe, including in Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Panama, Guatemala, Venezuela, Portugal, and France.
